After a particularly painful workout, I decided that enough was enough, and sat down with a pen and paper to map out a new training program.
After a few months of testing and tweaking the workouts, here’s what happened…
First, I was finally enjoying training again, and gaining some muscle.
My joints were a lot happier, and felt better than they had done in years. With the exception of a long-standing knee injury, the nagging aches and pains had all but vanished.
Gone were the days of hobbling down the stairs the morning after a day of heavy squats or deadlifts.
There were no exercises, such as the squat, bench press or deadlift, that I “had” to do. The option was there to do them if I wanted, but they weren’t essential.
What’s more, the program was very flexible, and didn’t require me to work out on set days. So if I missed a workout, I could just push it back to the following day.
A couple of techniques I’d been using to “compress” the workouts meant that I was in and out of the gym in less than an hour – sometimes closer to 45 minutes – and I loved it.
I call the new program MX4…
The M is short for muscle, as that’s what the program is designed to give you more of. The number 4 refers to the default number of weekly training days, although there are 2-day and 3-day options available.
You can use MX4 to maximize your rate of muscle growth while you gain weight, or to retain (or even gain) muscle mass while you chisel away the fat.

There’s no reason why you can’t use these exercises if you want to (the program gives you the freedom to choose your exercises and shape it to your individual requirements), but they’re not essential for muscle growth.
4. The workouts laid out in the manual assume that you have access to a gym. But there’s no reason why you can’t switch out some of the exercises and choose different ones (which I can help you with via email), and the program can be done with a bench and adjustable dumbbells.
5. MX4 is not a “fashionable” workout. There are no box jumps, medicine ball slams, or battling rope exercises.
